Emily Drinkard

Emily Drinkard, known professionally as Cissy Houston, was one of the founding members of The Sweet Inspirations which were hired to sing backing vocals for Elvis on his return to live performances during July and August 1969.

Everybody in the Elvis World knows Cissy Houston's soprano voice because it is her you hear on the infamous 1969 Laughing Version of Are You Lonesome Tonight.

By September 1969, Cissy had grown tired of performing on the road as her three children were growing up. That month, she decided to quit The Sweet Inspirations and stop touring to stay at home while also settling on a solo career.

Cissy's versatile cross-genre singing style kept her highly in demand as a session musician with some of the great recording artists. She recorded more than 600 songs in her career, which culminated with two Grammy Award wins, both in the Traditional Gospel Album category.

Clever Creations

In the Elvis World it is common knowledge that Bill Belew designed Elvis' jumpsuits. And yes, initially Belew did design Elvis' jumpsuits from 1969 onwards. However, from 1972 onwards Bill was in big demand and that was the moment that Gene Doucette came into the picture.

Bill would give Gene the blank suits and Gene would make the designs of the more elaborate suits for Elvis, such as the Aloha, Peacock, Tiger, American Eagle and Sundial suits.

And yes, Gene also created the custom made boxing robe that Elvis gifted to Muhammad Ali. Unfortunately, Gene received incorrect instructions for the order, which was supposed to be the "People's Champ". Gene Doucette worked quietly in the background and ultimately never met die man who took such delight in his clever creations.

Memories

Dave Hebler, a 10th degree Black Belt, served as one of Elvis' personal bodyguards and Kenpo instructor from 1972 to 1976. 

Recently he was back in Memphis for the FIRST time since Elvis' passing and he reminisced about his times with Elvis at the Memphian movie theatre and on the road:

The Memphian was a very important part of Elvis' life. I remember the Peter Sellers movies, he liked that. As far as protecting Elvis, using my skills was no easy task. Being Elvis' bodyguard was the worse job on the face of the planet! I mean, think about it: everywhere we went there were hundreds of love-starved women just doing their best to try to get next to Elvis. Being Elvis' bodyguard and personal karate instructor was a once in a life time experience, though I have such great memories of that time.

Francis Zambon

Mark James, born as Francis Zambon, is a well-known American songwriter, 5 years younger than Elvis, and hailing from Houston, TX. In High School he played the violin and accordion, but really fell in love with music when he picked up a guitar. He wrote songs and performed in clubs, changing his name to Mark James. He wanted to record his own songs himself and formed a band, The Mark James Trio, but he received only a minor hit.

Then Mark was drafted to serve in Vietnam. In 1968, after his discharge, he moved to Memphis to work as a staff songwriter for producer Chips Moman. In the same year he penned and recorded Suspicious Minds by himself but it failed to chart.

A year later Elvis picked this song at his American Sound Studio recordings and the rest is history. James had explained that the song related to his complex emotions around being married but being in love with his childhood sweetheart. He went on to write more than 300 songs in a career that spanned 7 decades.

All in all, Elvis recorded 5 of Mark's compositions:

1. Suspicious Minds

2. It's Only Love

3. Always On My Mind

4. Raised On Rock

5. Moody Blue

James' most successful composition is Always On My Mind. 300 Singers recorded it. Willie Nelson's cover made it a huge hit and Mark won 2 Grammy's. In 2015 Mark James entered The Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Was Elvis Interested?

The year 1959, Elvis' full year in Germany in the army, is more or less a "missing" year in Elvis history. We do not know that much about Elvis' life during this time frame. 

Take for example the story about a certain German actress, Vera Tschechowa - 18 years old at the time - who tried to meet Elvis when he was on field training exercises. That didn't work out, but Vera soon got a lucky break because she was hired to pose for publicity photos with Elvis for The March of Dimes campaign.

After their photoshoot Elvis and Vera posed for a formal portrait which appeared on the cover of the German magazine called Funk Illustrierte. During that day Elvis and Vera also visited the Frankfort Zoo, spending some quality time together.

After a while Vera visited Elvis in Bad Nauheim, and a few months later Elvis surprised her with a return visit that lasted 4 days. During this visit they frequented the Moulin Rouge and other night clubs in Munich.

Was Elvis interested in Vera? Who knows. To Vera, however, it was all priceless free publicity that she as a young and emerging actress was interested in.

The Next Step

The Ryman Auditorium, home to the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, TN, was built as a grand place of worship by Captain Thomas Ryan who first led a rather questionable life but later became a Christian.

After his passing in 1904, his namesake building eventually became one of the most legendary music venues in the world.

Fast forward to 1954. Elvis' first professional appearance is at the Overton Shell Park in Memphis. It goes well. He's a hit.

The next step is national attention via a try out at the Grand Ole Opry. It's a 300 km ride. To Elvis, Scotty and Bill the Ryman Auditorium is like a shrine. None of them has ever attended a show there and they wander around the dilapidated building in a daze, overwhelmed by the sense of history in the room.

Backstage, Elvis is insecure and scared stiff. He confesses to upcoming 20-year-old bass player Buddy Killen: They're going to hate me. If they'd just let me leave, I'd go right now. There are two more surprises for the band: Marion Keisker, supposed to be on duty at SUN, has left her post and driven all the way to appear backstage for support, plus Bill and Scotty's wives are in the front row.

Hank Snow introduces Elvis as "a new young and upcoming singer", but forget Elvis' name in the process! Elvis bounces out on stage the same way that he always does, as if he's just fallen off a fast-moving train, and does his one number. Scotty and Bill are more nervous than Elvis; to them it seems, there is nowhere to go but down from here, and they can sense by the polite, but tepid reception that this is exactly where they are going.

Elvis never performs on the Opry again but visits friends backstage at the Ryman in 1957.

The 2nd Was The 1st

 Elvis had 4 Stutz cars:

1. Blackhawk (bought 1970)

2. Two-Seater (bought 1971)

3. Pearl White Stutz (ordered after seeing it in a showroom window)

4. Blackhawk with Red Leather Interior (bought 1974 - his favourite and the last car he ever drove.)

Back to Blackhawk #1. The series was built on Pontiac chassis from the USA and shipped to Italy to get new bodies to transform them into Stutz Blackhawks, the most expensive cars at the time. The first prototype was made in 1969 and driven by the founder. The second prototype was the 1st Stutz Blackhawk ever SOLD, and to none other than Elvis!

Funny story. The first USA Stutz dealer shows up at Elvis' home at Hillcrest, CA, with the second prototype. Elvis is interested. He's told he can sign a contract and they will build him his Blackhawk. Elvis isn't interested in signing a contract, he's interested in buying the car, the one standing next to him. The car dealer tries to explain that it is the very first Stutz and he needs the car to drive around to show potential buyers. Elvis answers with a question: How do you think you will sell more cars, when YOU drive it, or when the people see ME driving it around? 

Good point. It works. Elvis gets the car, although he agrees to it being displayed at a motor show prior to delivery and some press pictures of him and the car.

Interesting twist: Sinatra is also interested in the Stutz. However, he will not agree to the publicity photos or the display at the car-show.

Topic of the Day

Recently unseen footage of Elvis was found, originating from a TV station in Fort Worth, TX. In the early hours of 11 January 1958 Elvis was on his way to Hollywood via train for the filming of his 4th film, King Creole. During a one hour lay over at the Fort Worth train station he stepped off to chat with fans and give autographs. Inside the train Elvis talked to news reporters. 

He could have been asked ANYTHING about his upcoming induction into the army, but take a guess what became the topic of the day? His hair. Mindboggling. 

Reporter: What do you think about jerks like the one in Kentucky who quit the draft board because you were given a 60-day deferment [for the filming of King Creole]?

Elvis: Mr. Hershey? Well, I'm just like him, I was expecting it.

Reporter: Would you rather be a lover or a fighter?

Elvis: It's just according to what the situation is, you know what I mean? Sometimes you'd have to be both.

Reporter: Do you mind cutting your sideburns as part of the army induction?

Elvis: No, they'll grow back. If it was a situation if they cut them off and I never could have any more then I would worry about them.

Reporter: The sideburns look shorter today. Have you worn them shorter than usual?

Elvis: Well, I wore them shorter than I use to, uh-huh.

Reporter: What's the reason for that, maybe?

Elvis: Well, I don't know... 

Restore It

Tennessee (TN) is Elvis' home state. The state of Tennessee is divided into West, Middle and East Tennessee, home to about 7,2 million people. Tennessee has 95 counties, of which Shelby County is located in West-Tennessee. Elvis' hometown, Memphis, is situated in Shelby County, West-Tennessee. 

When Nicolette, Rita and I visited Memphis in 2007, we happen upon one of the few Elvis childhood homes still standing, namely 2414 Lamar Ave.

The Presleys rented 2414 Lamar Ave from May-Nov 1955, after which an extension was added to the front of the house. When we were there, the house was seemingly used as a creche. We couldn't go inside and wished someone would restore it to how it looked like when Elvis lived there. I was sad to hear the place fell victim to a fire in 1923. 

Seemingly Shelby County now owns 2414 Lamar Ave and the mayor seems optimistic to restore it as a new kind of showcase to represent part of Elvis' youth and some of his musical influences.

One Hour Lay Over

Remember the Elvis CHRISTMAS DUETS CD release of 2008? 

All Elvis/female duets. Yeah, I didn't much like it. But it did break into the US Billboard 200 at No.17. 

And what turns up 4 years later in 2012? Yes, another Christmas compilation, the CLASSIC CHRISTMAS album. Much better album cover! And on it? Material from Elvis' two original Christmas albums, the single If Everyday Was Like Christmas PLUS 2 duets from the 2008 CHRISTMAS DUETS album. 

They DID surprise us with a marvellous promotional video, though: Fantasy Martina McBride and Elvis '68. Guess what? The audio from this video has never been released. 

Fast forward 12 years. Out of nowhere the CLASSIC CHRISTMAS album shoots to No.1 on the Top ROCK Albums Chart.

A tip of the hat to all the new Elvis fans everywhere.  

Elvis In The Making

Director Baz Luhrman, writer/director/producer of the marvellous Elvis (2022) film, has a new Elvis project in the making! We are overjoyed because we've been waiting for an official release of the hours of unseen footage of Elvis' two thrilling rockumentaries for over half a century. It's not that we've not been asking, we have, but to no avail. 

Fortunately for Elvis fans, it seems Lurhman not only gave most fans joy with his 2022 film, but also got a new generation PLUS himself hooked on Elvis. 

According to Baz the film will neither be a documentary nor a concert film, so how it will look like is a mystery. The contents, however, is from unreleased footage of Elvis: That's The Way It Is (1970) and Elvis On Tour (1972). 

Baz recently announced on social media: We HAVE found the footage. We found it, and a lot of it, and sound ... inside, where they were storing it. I will do that extra concert film. 

When Baz was asked if he's seen the footage, he replied: Oh, I've seen a lot of it. It's extraordinary what's there. It shocked even me what is there. And, more importantly, we have the SOUND.

A trailer of this exciting announcement has been released. At long last, it seems the decades long dream of many an Elvis fan may come true.
